This safari will combine Rwanda’s highlights such as an intimate experience of tracking chimpanzees in Nyungwe forest national park. Gorillas trekking in Volcanoes National Park as well as enjoy game viewing in Akagera National Park.
On arrival at Kigali International Airport and after finalizing the formalities, you shall be welcomed by your guide, who will then drive you to your hotel.
Drive to Nyungwe Forest in western Rwanda. This forest protects the largest single tract of Montagne forest remaining in Africa. It is a remarkably rich center of biodiversity, with 86 mammal species, 280 birds, and about 100 varieties of orchid. It is the most important birding site in Rwanda. On your drive today, you will be passing through the town of Butare, here you can visit Butare National Museum displaying a range of ethnographic objects that will give you an insight into the rich traditional life and culture of the country. Also you will visit the ancient King´s Palace at Nyanza.
After breakfast you will go chimpanzee tracking in the Forest. Nyungwe forest is most treasured for its primates, there is a remarkable 13 primate species recorded resident in this lush rainforest. This includes the chimpanzee as well as the delightful L’Hoest’s monkey and numerous fun-loving troops of Black and White Colobus. Return to the lodge for lunch. In the afternoon go for the canopy walk which is set 50 meters above the ground with a 150-meter walkway and known as the first of its kind in East Africa and third on the continent after South Africa and Ghana. These canopies walk allows visitors to see the forest from above the trees and be at eye level with birds and monkeys that inhabit the upper part of the forest.
After breakfast, depart for Volcanoes National Park. The journey goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that show much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. You will choose to have the afternoon at leisure or explore the town of Ruhengeri or visit the Ibwachu community.
Today you will get up early and drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, you will go to ORTPN offices for briefing after that set off in the forest for Gorilla trekking. A thrilling trek through the refined foothills of the Virungas led by an experienced ranger Guide provides inspiring views in all directions. Gorilla trekking is quite strenuous but a worthwhile on encounter of these gentle giants. Depending on the location of the gorillas on any given day the walk can take anything from 1 to 7 hours. Once the family of gorillas have been located, settle in to the environment and enjoy the hour you have to quietly observe these fascinating primates whose habits and mannerisms remind us so much of our own.
Drive to Akagera National park close to the border with Tanzania. This Park borders fine-looking rising and falling plains, solid broad-leafed forests, and brighter acacia woods that define its favorable nature to animals and visitors. Time allowing, you will go for an afternoon game drive where you will spot mammals like Giraffes, Buffaloes, Elephants, Crocodiles, Hippos Spotted Hyenas and masses of birds.
Today you will have an early morning game drive in the park to see various savannah wildlife and afternoon take the boat cruise. then return to your accommodation and in the afternoon have a boat ride on lake Ihema. You will sail along the water edge which is covered with several trees, drift past numbers of aquatic animals such as giant hippos and see several crocodiles some in the shallows of the water and others basking on the shore as well as aquatic birds.
Today, you will drive to Kigali town you will visit the genocide museum as well as have a short city Tour of the capital city. You will depart for the Airport and take your flight back home.
