This safari gives you a once in a lifetime encounter with the mountain Gorillas in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and the eastern lowland gorillas in Kahuzi Biega National Park.

Tour Plan

Day 1 | Volcanoes National Park

Arrival at Kigali International Airport in Rwanda early in the morning and after finalizing the formalities, you shall be welcomed by your guide who will transfer you to Volcanoes National Park. The journey goes through the beautiful terraced hillsides that show much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible. In the afternoon, visit the Iby' Iwachu Cultural Village, a beautiful project employing and empowering the community and providing alternatives to poaching.

Day 2 | Gorilla trekking

Today you will get up early and drive to Volcanoes National Park in Ruhengeri, you will go to ORTPN offices for briefing after that set off in the forest for Gorilla trekking. A thrilling trek through the refined foothills of the Virungas led by an experienced ranger Guide provides inspiring views in all directions. Gorilla trekking is quite strenuous but a worthwhile on encounter of these gentle giants. Depending on the location of the gorillas on any given day the walk can take anything from 1 to 7 hours. Once the family of gorillas have been located, settle in to the environment and enjoy the hour you have to quietly observe these fascinating primates whose habits and mannerisms remind us so much of our own.

Day 3 | Kigali

Today, you will choose to have Golden monkeys in Volcanoes and thereafter drive back to Kigali. Enjoy a city tour including a visit to the Genocide Museum in the suburb Gisozi. Proceed to the hotel for an overnight.

Day 4 | Bukavu

Today, you will start the drive from Kigali to the city of Cyangugu, also named Kamembe (station border of Ruzizi I). It’s the nearest town to Bukavu, after crossing the two borders,  drive to a lodge in Bukavu for an overnight.

Day 5 | Gorilla trekking

After an early morning meal, your driver or guide will pick you up from your accommodation and transport you to the park quarters for a briefing before to your gorilla trekking expeditions. From there, you will be transferred to the trail head and begin your treks. Once you've met the gorillas, you'll get an hour to spend with them. After that, return to Bukavu and enjoy the sunset over Lake Kivu on your way back to your hotel.

Day 6 | Departure

Today you will cross the border back to Rwanda. You may choose to take a flight back from Kamembe airport near the Congo Border or take the 7-8 hours drive back to Kigali international Airport for the late evening onward flight back.
