Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is 33.7 km sq at an altitude of 2,227m – 4,127m. Mgahinga’s most striking features are its three conical, extinct volcanoes (that are part of the spectacular Virunga Range that lies along the border region of Uganda, Congo and Rwanda. The volcanoes’ slopes contain various ecosystems and are biologically diverse, and their peaks provide a striking backdrop to this gorgeous scenery. Mt. Sabinyo at 3,669m, Mt. Gahinga (3,474m), and Mt. Muhavura at 4,127m can all be summited and it takes been 6-8 hours. It is naturally gifted with four montane vegetation zones, endemic bird species, stunning crater lakes, and two critically endangered primates, golden monkeys, and mountain gorillas. The park is has one habituated trans-boundary mountain gorilla group called Nyakagezi that moves between Congo and Rwanda. It is also a habitat for the endangered Golden monkey and also has a huge cultural significance, in particular for the indigenous Batwa pygmies. This tribe of hunter-gatherers was the forest’s “first people”, and their ancient knowledge of its secrets remains unrivaled.
